The Indian passport now ranks 79th on the Guide Passport Index. It allows visa-free travel to 56 places. Indian passport holders have visa-free travel and visa-on-arrival in countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Rwanda. Indian citizens, however, require a visa to enter 173 countries around the world, including China, Japan, Russia, the United States, and the whole European Union. The high visa requirement leads to a low mobility score.

The ranking of India passports in comparison to other global passports is calculated by adding the number of countries that allow India passport holders to enter without a visa (i.e. visa-free countries) to those that allow India passport holders to enter by obtaining a visa on arrival (i.e. visa-on-arrival countries) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). There are now 26 India passport-free countries, 29 India visa-on-arrival countries, and one eTA destination. India passport holders can access 56 places without a visa, with a visa on arrival, or through an eTA. As a result, the Indian passport is ranked 79 in the worldAside from these India visa-free and visa-on-arrival countries, there are 173 additional destinations where Indian passport holders must get a physical visa or an eVisa.
